A day of festivity; a day of eating

Dec 24, 2013 was declared holiday by the government. I thought that I would at least spent half of this day sleeping since I already did the grocery and everything that’s needed for the night festivity, the Noche Buena. But I was wrong, cause even when I was still dreaming; I could already hear the busy sounds of something and smell of cooking.

Avoid the Morning Rush: Take the morning plunge with Nestea RTD

Do you go through your mornings in one big blur?  Do you find yourself racing from one task to another without enough time to breathe?
The morning rush is something we have grown accustomed to and we no longer question if chaotic mornings are the only way to go. But peaceful and blissful mornings are possible if we take the plungethe night before. A great day starts with good night’s sleep, making the morning plunge a relaxing dip into your day.
So here are a few things to do the night before to finally avoid the morning rush.
Have a to-do list and plunge into it
Instead of taking the morning plunge without warning, write a to-do list the night before to keep you focused. The first thing on every to-do list is to gather your wits and relax, and the best way to do this is to refresh your body and your mind. Drink your favorite Nestea in a Bottle as you make your list and you’ll find yourself in the zone and taking the plunge before your day even starts.

Spreading the Joy of Healthy Living

Anywhere you look, there are gyms, fitness centers, yoga parlors, among countless other establishments, that promote physical movement and active lifestyle. People are now more conscious of keeping fit and staying within their ideal weight. Part of staying healthy is, of course, diet. Quick to adapt every diet fad that comes their way—South Beach, Atkin’s and Mediterranean—they won’t mind spending a little bit extra for organic and healthier options.

One food option that they can integrate into their diet is probably something that they have loved while growing up and is readily available on the dining table or the cupboard: Lily’s Peanut Butter. Yes, the iconic local brand that has delighted the palate of generations of Filipinos can fit into a reportaire of tasty, organic and healthy food sources. Have a listen.

Go healthy when you’re hungry with McVities Digestive

Why are we always hungry by 4 pm no matter what we had for lunch? This is the time that we have our afternoon snack we Filipinos call “merienda,” the counterpart of “tea time” by the British.

And this is the time we usually have a stronger craving for food, especially those quick-to-grab yet unhealthy snacks—chips and cookies, in particular—when we feel hungry that we could “eat a horse.” But eating a heavy meal is not really advisable as it is just a few hours from dinner when we would usually have something filling.

Good thing that McVitie’s Digestive Biscuits offer a healthier option to too sweet and starchy snacks. Britain’s most popular biscuits are made from a blend of wheat flour and wholemeal and comes with a crumbly texture, an original and satisfying flavor that you’ll find yourself pleased very quickly! All variants of McVitie’s Digestives have no artificial colors or flavors and hydrogenated fat.

Tame the mid-year madness with Nestea RTD

June is a time of transitions in the Philippines. It signals the end of summer and the start of the school year. It’s the month when we declared our independence from colonial rule. It is the halfway point to a year that was hopefully good and is just about to get better.

So how to cope with this high-stress period of mid-year, when everything – from school starting to mid-year office reviews to higher-volume traffic turns your comfortable homeground into a battleground?
Start by taking the year not as halfway done, but halfway there. With this glass half-full perspective, it’s a great time to create new habits and start refreshed – after all, there’s six more months to go before we start anew.

A Fruity Twist on a Beloved Classic Dunkin Donut

These days, I love eating fruits but I love to eats sweets as well. Now, I can have both in one bite and it’s courtesy of Dunkin Donut. Giving everything I want seems to be their goal in life.

Living in the tropics means we have classic go-to fruits for every season. What’s even better is that we can enjoy them year-round, come rain or come shine. Looking for specialty fruits per region is also an exciting adventure, because the Philippines seems to have as many fruits as it does regions.
Year-round fruits are a constant delight, and in this area, the banana leads the pack. Whether you like the Lakatan, Saba, or Señorita, it is great as is ripe, or sugared with ice and milk. Legend has it that the first banana tree grew somewhere in Mindanao, and came from the heart of a young maiden who refused to marry someone she did not love.

Predicting rainy season health hazards as early as summer

Summertime is here and this is the moment we should really enjoy. Doing thing that’s fun with your family should be the center of your attention.  Having the time to enjoy every moment that you’re together is the priority.
Summer is definitely at its peak, and with the scorching season lasting over 2 months, families can bask in the enjoyment of beach trips and outdoor adventures.
However, many parents may not be aware that with the effects of climate change and global warming, summer can be the best time to prepare our families for possible health risks during the rainy season. Just like the classic childhood tale of The Ant and The Grasshopper, it’s best to plan this early for the coming rainy season.
The monsoon can give relief after the summer heat. But parents should be wary about the germs and diseases that the rains bring to the household, which can add to the risk of malaria, pneumonia, and complications of the common cold. So here are 5 practical tips to keep your family protected.
 1.     Having a clean and safe environment should start from home, and one of the steps is to maintain a germ-free kitchen. According to a 2011 study made by the National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF), kitchen countertops, sinks, and dish rags are three out of the top ten germiest places at home, so better make sure all surfaces are clean and dry. Use a trusted brand of cleaning liquid along with clear water, and do it at least twice a day. It’s also best to replace kitchen sponge every 1 to 2 days.
 2.     Bathrooms should be well sanitized. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bacteria and viruses can live two hours or longer on certain surfaces, so washing your hands after using the toilet should be a common rule that should not only be applied outside the home; and more so because this is the main cause of spreading water-borne diseases. To keep your bathrooms clean, use a diluted antiseptic liquid at least once a day.
3.     Do not wear damp clothes for long periods. Fungal infections and itching are common skin ailments during the rainy season, which usually happen due to dampness. It’s also best to wear open-toed and waterproof footwear when stepping out in the rain.
 4.     If there’s one alarming health risk during the monsoon, parents can probably say it’s dengue. So keep mosquitoes and house flies at bay by ensuring that the house is free from stagnant water. Parents should be aware that normally, dengue-carrying mosquitoes spread the disease during the day, while malaria-carrying ones are active during the night, so best to safeguard the family with mosquito-repellent spray or lotion. As an alternative, you may put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in water and place it in strategic places.

5.     Your water source should be clean and safe at all times. Based on a CDC report, water, sanitation, and hygiene have the potential to prevent at least 9.1% of the global disease burden and 6.3% of all deaths. Moreover, water-borne infections are rampant during the rainy season, so unless you are confident about your source of drinking water, it’s best to bring your own.
Parents should never entrust their kids’ safety to just any brand of drinking water. In the Philippines, the first and currently the only brand in the Philippines to receive certification from NSF international is Absolute Pure Distilled Drinking Water. It is certified to follow international standards of safety and cleanliness for bottled water.

The list may go on and on, but these basic tips are a good starting point to keep your family safe from potential harm caused by monsoon, as early as summer. After all, a healthy living environment is prompted by a clean and safe lifestyle.

###
About Absolute Pure Distilled Drinking Water
Absolute Pure Distilled Drinking Water is certified and approved by the Bureau of Food and Drugs for meeting the country’s highest and strictest bottled drinking water standards. It is a member of the International Bottled Water Association, and is the first and currently the only brand in the country to receive a National Sanitation Foundation International International certification.

Holy Week Recipe

Holy Week calls for an entire week of fasting and abstinence. This means that your list of meal choices gets drastically trimmed down. But there are still plenty of meals you can whip up at home that are still scrumptious but guilt-free. Here are some great dishes with their corresponding recipes to try out courtesy of Philips.

Prepare a simple pasta dish with portabello mushrooms for the family this Holy Week and stay true to your fasting and abstinence duties. Usually an extender for meat dishes, the mushroom will surely provide a healthy alternative from the usual meaty pasta. Definitely this will be one of the go-to dishes for an entire week.

But just because you have to abstain from meat, doesn’t mean you have to forego nutrients. Seal in all the nutrients of all the ingredients of the pasta dish as well as every meal you wish to cook with the Philips Induction Cooker HD4932.

Ponder No More: Get You're Pon de Ring at Mr. Donut Cafe

Well,
From Japan to the Philippines, the ring of chewy, fluffy, irresistible little balls know as Pon de Ring is now being served at Mr. Donut Café. Outside, it looks liked a ring of donut balls stuck together, but inside the slightly crunchy exterior is something words can’t explain.  When I heard that the Pon de Ring is chewy, my question is “How can you make a donut chewy”. Well Mr. Donut Café is serving Pon de Ring, so it can be done. But just because Mr. Donut Café can do it, it doesn’t, mean that others could do it. Mr. Donut is the only who could give their donut that chewiness and it’s a secret ingredient that I can’t find out because, if I did find out about it then I’m dead (just joking).

It’s often said that if you’re a Kapampangan, you are definitely a good cook.  If ever you are looking for an authentic Filipino restaurant then you better head on to Fely J’s Kitchen located at the 2nd Level of Greenbelt 5 in Ayala Center, Makati. Having a mom who’s also a Kapampangan, I’m always on the look out for Filipino restaurant that served truly Pinoy dishes.

Being a food adventurist who tasted different cuisine, nothing beats the Pinoy food. Fely J’s Restaurant is nothing but ordinary. The setting of the restaurant may simple but that simplicity embodied a woman who is graceful, natural and true.

I grew up loving the dish, sinigang. Fely J’s Restaurant Sinigang Pork Ribs should not a miss in our order. Fely J’s Sinigang Pork Rib soup is made up of natural bayabas fruit. The bayabas was puree to make as the base soup main ingredients, no artificial flavoring was used that’s why its so ______ (I don’t know how to explain it, but you really have to taste it so that you too will be speechless, this dish top my list).

Next, the Kare Kare Klab. To tell you the truth; with just the sauce itself and its vegetable, I’m done. Done meaning,” buhay na buhay na ko “. The sauce is made from scratch, meaning the peanut was grinded to serve as the sauce. The vegetable still maintain their crispiness. The meats are tender and I actually didn’t use the bagoong since it’s still flavorful. Five thumbs up to this dish.

For health conscious, there’s the Gule Magalang. So simple yet flavorful. Combining the leaves of three different vegetable with the pumpkin was a hit.

For meat lovers like my friend, she recommends the Lamb Kaldereta.

And don’t forget to order the Fely J’s Temple Crab, its spiciness will hit you like a bomb and you will ask for more.

Now, lets go to our dessert. Do ask for the Sikreto Ni Maria. The good old combination of manga and suman will never go wrong.

Fely J’s Kitchen, a restaurant dedicated to the memory of Felicidad de Jesus-Cruz, mother of the late restaurateur Larry J. Cruz, features Fely J’s treasured recipes which she picked up in her travels. The restaurant offers a variety of Filipino and Asian dishes served Fely J’s style: fresh, natural and attractive, just as she was herself, a pretty, adventurous woman who grew old gracefully without artificial touches.
